I met Renee back in 2013 while shooting my second ever wedding as a lead photographer (Brianna and Jarrod, love you guys!). I was sitting down eating dinner when the worst thing that could have happened did: an entire tray of cupcakes fell off the pile being carried in. As (bad) luck would have it, these were the bride’s favorites of course. However, Brianna’s bad luck became my EXTREMELY good luck because I not only started talking to Renee to see if I could help, but Renee gave me now smeared and smushed cupcakes to take home. Let me tell you, chocolate raspberry cupcakes with fresh raspberries inside still taste just fine no matter what shape they’re in!
Fast forward two years and Renee’s business, The Queens Cups, has taken off. It is incredibly exciting to see another person and their business in the wedding industry grow so much so quickly. I’m very happy to introduce you too all of the hard workers on her team in the pictures: Renee King, Barb King, Paul King Sr., Abby West, Becca Rose, Emily Charbonneau and Payton Bruegger.
The Queens Cups create new flavors all the time and they are rotated regularly through the store. Here’s a quick sample, but the list and possibilities are endless. You can check on the latest flavors by visiting The Queens Cups on Facebook, checking their website The Queens Cups and you can also follow them on Instagram using The Queens Cupsusing the hashtags #thequeenscups and #TQCorDie.

Each and every cupcake is made from scratch, and whether you are planning a wedding, birthday party, graduation or baptism The Queens Cups can accommodate your occasion. Please think about stopping by the shop in Milbury, MA if you are in the area, I can promise you it’s worth the drive! I had a great time at the shop and certainly won’t forget the laughs or Barb’s selfie stick anytime soon. I can’t wait to see this group again for more laughs and more cupcakes!
I remember seeing Stephanie in line during college orientation, standing outside of the dorm at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Flashback to the good, old college years. We were in the same major through school, and it was during college that she met her husband Jon. We all have been fortunate enough to stay in touch for years now. Now fast forward through seven years of marriage, two boys and another baby on the way for this gorgeous couple. When Stephanie had contacted me about possibly setting up a time to do a maternity shoot, I knew this one would be the for the books. She mentioned the beach and I was ALL IN! A maternity shoot at Sandy Beach in Cohasset with a friend from college, and it’s actually the same location where their engagement photos were taken. When I learned that this was always a dream of hers, I knew that this was also a dream shoot for me! Stephanie and Jon are expecting a third child, a baby girl, due any day now. Big brothers Aidan & Dylan are excited to meet their baby sister Addyson.
We met for an early morning session, 8am to be exact. Stephanie you are a trooper and I do appreciate it. Photographing early in the morning and late in the evening is the best time for lighting for photographers. Some think that noon time is the best while it’s actually the hardest time to photograph. It can be done, but it’s a little tricky. Fortunately for Stephanie and I, the weather worked out great. The temperatures were supposed to warm up that day. It was cool at 8am but we had the sun in our favor. When I arrived to the beach there was a little haze over the water which quickly burned off from the sun. We had sunshine and good areas to photograph. If you live in the New England area please take a trip to Sandy Beach in Cohasset, it’s beautiful.
The boys met up with us later on, and they were so excited to be at the beach! Once we were done photographing and starting to say our goodbyes, the weather quickly changed. Fog rolled in from the ocean, and while it was really cool to see we were thankful we had started so early in the morning. I was on my way home and received a text from Stephanie saying the fog got even worse and the temperature dropped 10 degrees. I couldn’t stop saying to her that it was meant to be! Her dream came true! Stephanie and Jon congrats, on the arrival of your daughter! Can’t wait to meet her and I’m truly thankful for our friendship.
I can’t tell you exactly when I met Andrew in school growing up, all I know is that he is funny. We had a lot of laughs with other friends, and I even let him copy a paper once. In an appropriate demonstration of karma, his was picked as one of the worst. But that’s what friends are for, we help each other out. The one and only time I went to visit Andrew at college was when I briefly met Joanne, his future wife. She was a lot of fun like Andrew. After college we all moved home, and I invited Joanne to girl’s night every Thursday evening to watch Grey’s Anatomy, cook dinner and enjoy a few adult beverages. Those were the good old days.
Fast forward at least 6 years and here we are. My best friends are expecting their first child together! Andrew and Joanne have decided not to find out the baby’s sex, which I love. It’s a personal choice to be sure but I feel like it’s one of the last true surprises in life. A couple of weekends ago we met up to photograph the parents to be at one of my favorite areas in Southborough, MA. Joanne I cannot stop saying this, you are STUNNING! You look amazing. The nicer weather in the New England area provided a great surprise as well: the ice cream trucks are back out! Mommy to be wanted a treat for Baby Mackay, and we had a great time and plenty of laughs.
Andrew and Joanne, I cannot express enough how much I love you both. You come from amazing families that I love truly and I know how incredibly excited they are for you guys. Of course everyone wants to meet Baby Mackay and the baby will be adored and spoiled by all your loved ones. I know you both will be amazing but cool parents to Baby Mackay. Congratulations to you both!
Molly McGill and I have collaborated on this blog post. Over the winter I had the privilege of meeting Molly at Sam and James’ Wedding – Red Lion Inn, Cohasset MA. I couldn’t believe the way she transformed the venue into a work of art. Molly owns Fleur Events, and recently renovated her studio in Milton, MA. She is a wonderful talent and has a passion to match for flowers and design.
Below, Molly has given us all a great idea for Mother’s Day: a Do It Yourself floral arrangement. Thanks to Molly for this, and please check out her website and also give her a Like on Facebook at Fleur Events fan page!
Thanks for the tips Molly!
The flowers you choose for any arrangement should be selected with care. Like putting together a menu for a dinner party, each dish must both stand out, but also work in harmony with its fellows, in order to build something cohesive, but also more than the sum of its parts. When arranging flowers, I focus first on color, and then on texture–both must work together.
Color combinations can be as simple or as complex as you choose. When deciding, its helpful to have a palette of flowers in front of you for comparison. When fitting an arrangement for someone, I like to consider the colors and styles of the person’s clothes and character to help guide me.
Colors that are close to each other on the color wheel will always be the easiest to mix and match. Dark Purple and lavender will never offend one another. In a composed arrangement, its important to vary colors slightly, so that each flower is highlighted, and each shape becomes more distinct. In a monotone bouquet, you run the risk of losing the blossoms in a nondescript blob.
With this arrangement, I chose bold, complimenting colors, and made sure to include purple tones, as that’s my mother’s favorite color. While there isn’t a lot of true purple in this arrangement, I played with the concept by incorporating blues, burgundies, corals, and peach. Set beside each other, the collection sings a purple song.
When you chose a limited color palette, texture becomes especially important. In this case, the tulips feature a smooth texture, in juxtaposition to the ranunculus and wax flowers, which have a busier, ruffled texture.
When building a bouquet, don’t limit yourself to just one bunch of flowers. You will often find more interesting and varied textures among the plants at the store. I also love to use foraged elements whenever possible. Spring was still very much in hiding when I created this arrangement, so I gathered a few fallen branches both to build a base, and then to add unexpected texture.
1. Place branches in an arch shape into the vase to create a structure to weave your stems through. At first you will have to lay the flowers across each other, but as you build they will become more secure and you will have more freedom and support.
2. Clean any access petals off the tulips, and then lay them to one side of the arrangement.
3. Pull off the roses’ leaves, save one or two per stem. Lay the roses on the opposite side as the tulips, to create a balance. (Pro tip: use a long cut on the stems of the roses, this will optimize their longevity)
4. Cut the hydrangea at the base of their stems; like the roses, a longer cut will help the flowers last. The more the white inner part of the stem shows the better. Place hydrangea in the center of the arrangement between the roses and tulips.
5. Cut the phalaenopsis orchid, and place it on top of the hydrangea, slightly right of center. This placement will create a cascading focal point.
6. Start at the far left with a small collection of wax flowers in the same magenta tone as the orchid. Again this placement creates balance.
7. Float the delicate ranunculus over the display, keeping the stems long in order to show off their graceful lines. When placing fragile stems into an established structure, make sure to hold the stems toward the bottom for support.
I’m guilty! I haven’t blogged in a while, I know. Please comment and yell at me. I need to hold myself accountable and make it a weekly goal to blog! You heard/read it here first, I will be doing this more often. I will blog more about my goals in the upcoming weeks.
For this week I wanted to do something I have never done before. This is the start of a journal, a place to document my life. So here is the first installment of getting to know Jen Araya. Drum roll please……
10 Quirkiest Things About Jen Araya
I LOVE cheese
I talk in my sleep in the beginning of the night
I laugh at my jokes
I’m clumsy & never realized it
I don’t drink coffee. Water is my coffee!
No doubt, I love the beach = I love to travel
I love watching reality TV, sorry, but the Kardashians are funny
I tuck my pj pants into my socks during the winter so I stay warm
I make up my own words and phrases, for example “pains in the asses”
I answer questions with a question. Or just say yes without really answering the questions & don’t realize it.
I can’t deny it, I sometimes live in my own world. But I have fun and make people laugh and can lighten the mood. It’s a talent I can’t explain, but I like to laugh and enjoy life.
Yes, all these quirks listed above are true. I had my husband approve before posting. I run into door knobs, or corners of tables, filing cabinets. You know name it, I’ll run into it and have a bruise. Or I’ll talk to my husband in the middle of the night saying “this is on top of me, I’m underneath this” talking about the body pillow I sleep with. We all have our inside jokes and laughs as a couple. I would love to hear yours. Sometimes I say things and not think and laugh at myself for having a blonde moment. It always happens when I’m talking about something serious and realize I’m having an idiot moment.
I will proudly wear my pants inside of my socks too, with a picture to prove it!
