GOALS!!!!!
Goal Setting. I can’t believe we are starting a New Year! Where did 2015 go? I love talking about and creating Goals, and last year I did not publicly share my goals. I’ll be real; I had some goals from the previous year but never set new ones for 2015. I had them stored in my head. This year I’m going to be authentic and share it all!
First a little recap of 2015. I had four couples booked for weddings this past year. I LOVED all of them, and each one became special in a different way. I was able to build a relationship with each one, and for that I am incredibly grateful. I also shot at new venues which was incredibly exciting. Well let’s put it this year, all of them were a dream come true! (Yes I’m a little kid and get excited over the littlest things….) I got to photograph my AWESOME couples at the following venues: Cohasset Lion Inn, Wychmere Beach Club, Historic Wayside Inn and Danversport Yacht Club.
My goal was to photograph five weddings and second shoot ten weddings. I had four of my own, so I wasn’t quite there but very close, and drumroll please…… I second shot 15 weddings this past year! One of the best parts was having the chance to work with 13 different photographers and also assist a film photographer. In-between a crazy busy fall season I photographed engagement sessions for my weddings next year, and portrait sessions throughout. I tallied up and had over 30 portraits sessions. WOW is all I have to say right now. This was a huge jump for me from the previous year. I can’t help but be giddy and excited to see what is in store for 2016!
Now let’s get to this year’s goals. I have set some realistic goals for myself, which I hope to achieve over the course of this coming year. It will make me face my weaknesses and become stronger. I’ve also set up some Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs), the ones that are still realistic but it will be harder to achieve.
2016 Goals:
- Book ten weddings this year. I have four booked so far and can’t wait to meet more amazing couples and photograph their special day
- Photograph 40 portrait sessions – I love anniversaries shoots and couples. I have not photographed a proposal yet (but would love to if you’re reading this, wink wink!)
- Book a destination wedding
- Attend a photography conference this year
- Finish the Online Photography Academy and become a certified Wedding Photographer
- Create the Jen Araya Photography Bridal Guide
- Invest in a Business Coach
- Learn how to say No at opportunities that don’t fit my brand
- Blog consistently. I’m going to stick with it once a week and hope to work up to twice a week this year. Being more consistent is the most important factor to me right now
- Get published online or in print
- Pay myself and pay taxes quarterly
BHAG Goals:
- Photograph a wedding or portrait session in all 50 states
- Blog 3 times a week
- Use my passport to travel to a destination wedding out of the country
- Go Full time in 2017
- Travel more for photography
- Book 20 weddings
- Organize a styled shoot
Personal Goals:
- Organize the basement
- Ski Whistler
- Get fit & eat healthier = working out at least 3x a week
- Be more positive person
- Spend quality time with my husband such as scheduling date nights ahead of time and not breaking them
It’s important to set and achieve goals in your life. The best part of them is looking back to see what you’ve accomplished. It’s only going to make you a better person when you can look back on the goals you have achieved as well as the ones that you haven’t. When you don’t face the failed ones then you won’t learn how to get better. Here’s to facing the fears and failures and recognizing the achievements. Cheers to 2016!

Keith and Erin didn’t know that when they attended a summer party at a friend’s place that it would turn into meeting the love of their life. Keith and Erin met at a party in town. Huge Patriots fans!
Keith proposed at a family gathering (when? Soon after they met, recently, etc). While some family members knew it was going to happen, Erin most certainly did not. I think it’s incredibly sweet when someone proposes in front of their family members.
We went to the beautiful Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA. It was a quiet, not so busy day at the Wayside inn. If you are from the area, you know it can be extremely busy during the Fall when the leaves are changing on the property. We were really lucky to have a nice low-key or relaxingtime finding areas to photograph. Erin brought a variety of scarves to incorporate into their engagement shoot. Scarves are one of my favorite accessories!
I usually suggest always photographing early in the morning for the sunlight. Especially with a setting like the Wayside Inn‘s Grist Mill. The only way I can describe the lighting atthis charming venue is stunning, that’s the perfect word! It also tends to be less crowded if you arrive at any venue early in the day, which is certainly helpful. The Grist Mill is a gorgeous area to take photographs but can get really busy quickly with a lot of photographers.
Of course we had to incorporate our favorite team, The Patriots! That was definitely one of the highlights of the engagement shoot that we almost forgot about. Shame on us! So fun! Keith and Erin, I’m looking forward to your wedding next Fall! I know it’s going to be a ton of fun!

My future sister in law and brother asked if I would photograph their engagement session the day they got engaged, what an honor! I like to start at the beginning, so I have to ask if you remember when the game ‘Words with Friends?’ Everyone was playing this game! We all went to high school in Ashland, MA and Matt and Ashley met playing this game over the app. Fast forward to this past May. My brother called me and asked if we could help them move a piece of furniture. I did not think anything of it, but when we arrived I saw other cars in the driveway which was my first and only red flag. We walked in and Ashley said ”We are Engaged, hi new sister in law!” I knew that my brother was shopping but didn’t know when, so it was a great surprise and very exciting.
We had tried to schedule their engagement session several times during the summer , but we just couldn’t find a day that worked. Once we decided to move it to the Fall, of course the weather didn’t cooperate so we moved it again to the end of October. This time, we had a little more luck and we began to think about potential locations. Matt and Ashley had a location in mind, and my husband actually came home one day and mentioned he’d found a possible spot to shoot as well. We took a drive to both locations, and after seeing the place my husband found we knew that was the spot. Of course it was freezing cold that day, but they were troopers!
Once that morning arrived, the outfits were lined up and we nailed the engagement shoot. We had a really fun time and even used a scrabble board to represent how they met playing the game Words with Friends. They are getting married next July at Lake Pearl in Wrentham, MA. We are all very excited for this special day, and I know tt will be here before we know it.
I love that no matter what Matt and Ashley know I will be here for them! As we had prepared for their engagement session they asked for some advice on picking out outfits. Some may think it’s not a big detail, but being involved in some of the smaller details like picking out clothes means so much to me! I cherish my brothers and will do ANYTHING for them, and when they need my help I will be there in a second. We can’t wait for your wedding day; enjoy being engaged because it truly is the best feeling in the world! I will be there every step of the way to make sure they have an amazing wedding experience.

These are all so great! What sweet, fun pictures – love the ones of the scrabble game and her ring…and of course, their sweet pup!
When a college friend asks “Do you want to do a photoshoot with her new horse” of course you say yes! Kristin has been riding for a few years now, and it’s so exciting to see Kristin find the right horse. Kristin found Vinny this summer, and after seeing them together for a couple minutes as we got ready to shoot it was obvious that this is a match made in heaven. I’m not familiar with horses but was surprised to be so completely comfortable around Vinny. He is a really sweet horse, and it was adorable hearing Kristin talk to her baby Vinny.
We started out their session together at Kilkern Farm in Millis, MA on a beautiful Fall Saturday morning. Kristin made sure Vinny was ready for his debut. For the record, I had not photographed a horse before so I was going into it not sure what to expect. I can sometimes be skittish on new adventures, but of course thought to myself this is a new adventure and a great opportunity to try something different. I was able to pet Vinny, which he loves, and also held his reins and he was incredible! I even got a photo with him! Horses are amazing, gorgeous animals. It was nice to be able to get the chance to spend some time with one.
It’s pretty obvious Kristin loves Vinny and he loves her back, it shows. Kristin enjoy your new addition to your family, and you never know but I may one day get into Equestrian Photography! Don’t forget to follow my adventures on Instagram here with the hashtag #jenarayaadventures. Enjoy some of my favorite images from their photoshoot.

Niki - Beautiful headshots!
Authenticity is something I want to convey more of this year, too! I think IG perfect images are nice and all… but they aren’t always realistic for me? Sometimes I want to take a picture at night when the lighting is subpar, lol!
I hope 2016 is a wildly happy and fulfilling year for you!

Sam Wilkie - You have inspired me! This post is me to a “T”! I have been thinking about making the same changes, but I have been hesitant to take the leap. If you have the courage to do it though, then so can I! I love your idea of picking a theme for the year, and the sense of purpose it gives. I may have to barrow that. 😉
jenaraya5@yahoo.com - Do it Sam!!!!! It will be worth it 🙂 xoxo
