Whistler.  Just writing that makes me smile!  Back in November I had a crazy idea, and proposed it to my husband.  Getting ready for work one morning I said “I know we want to have kids, but since we aren’t quite there yet why don’t we cross a trip off the bucket list?  Why not go to Whistler this year?”  It’s been a dream of his to ski there for years, and he had always wanted to go with one of his oldest friends from high school.  Later that week, we got on the phone with Brian and he was in. It was a go!  This became a very special trip for two reasons.  Brian, my husband’s friend from high school, was also the Officiant at our wedding and any time spent with him is always fun.  Second, Sean had been traveling for work every week in February so it was really nice for us to be able to have this time away!

The trip itself started VERY early since we had a flight at 6 AM.  At 2:30am we rolled out of the house and were off to the airport, first to Minneapolis and then on our final leg to Vancouver, British Columbia.  Once we’d landed we had a little over a two hour bus ride up to Whistler-Blackcomb, but what a ride that was.  Vancouver is a beautiful city and the majority of the ride is along the Pacific Coastline.  Hard to beat those views!  Once we’d arrived we were thrilled to see that our choice for lodging was a good one.  We stayed at The Aspens on the Blackcomb base, and it was perfect.  It was ski on/ski off and about a fifteen minute walk or five minute bus ride to Whistler Village.  We did a little exposing that first day and then it was time to ski Whistler-Blackcomb!

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to doubting myself a little that first time we went up the slopes.  It was definitely a little intimidating and I thought “What have I gotten myself into?!?!?!”  They were rated as the Number 1 overall resort for 2016 and let me tell you, they lived up to it and then some.  We had a little bit of everything; clear days, some light snow and then about six to eight inches of fresh snow the last day.  I’d never skied powder of any kind before, so this was amazing.  I felt like I tested myself on this trip as well.  Sean and Brian are more advanced skiers, so being with them pushed me outside of my comfort zone.  I knew my limits, but at times I looked back at what I’d skied and thought “WOW!  I just skied that steep face!”  This was the best I’d ever skied, and I never thought I’d have even attempted moguls or a black diamond rated trail out west.  Now I can cross that off of my bucket list!  I also have to strongly recommend Ski Tracks, an app available for your phone.  It keeps track of your progress for the day, telling you how far you skied, how fast, how many vertical feet etc.  I would have never believed I could ski sixty-five miles in four days but this app was AWESOME for keeping tabs on that.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we got home but I am still smiling about this trip.  I was saying “I can’t believe we’re here” the whole time, and it really was too good to be true.  I feel like I can officially say “I’m a skier” now and that week was filled with great skiing, great company and most of all created some great memories.  I am certain we’ll go back one day, and I hope you enjoy the pictures below.  I do have one question for you though: What will you cross off your bucket list this year?

XOXO Jen Araya

Leo Turns One

How exciting it is to celebrate your child turning one!  I haven’t had children of my own quite yet, but I remember my cousins turning one and it’s such an amazing time (if you can’t tell from my Instagram feed I love cousin time!).  They are starting to talk, understand more, laugh, possibly even walking at one.  There are so many new things that they learn seemingly all at once.  Leo is a special little man!  He completes Audrie and Mark’s life.  I’ve known Mark since grade school, we grew up together.  His wife Audrie I’ve always remembered and loved her too.  They are an amazing couple and their family is now complete with Leo.

For this shoot, we met up at Tougas Farm in Northborough, MA on a sunny but brisk day.  Mark and Audrie were looking for a pumpkin patch, and Tougas Farm has one and also apple picking.  Who doesn’t love apple picking?  The weather was in our favor because the sun was shining during their family portrait shoot.  Leo was a little man and of course loving all of the attention.  Picture 3 adults singing playing peek a boo to get a baby to laugh or smile.  It was fun and I will do whatever it takes to your kids to smile.

We didn’t know was coming was on our drives home: it started SNOWING!  It was only October but welcome to New England!  You never know what Mother Nature has planned.

I had a great time catching up with Mark & Audrie and meeting little Leo for the first time.  Enjoy some of my favorite pictures from their family portrait session.  You have to check out the sneakers!  From what I heard it took a long time to get those on his feet.  Leo I hope you had an amazing birthday and can’t wait to see you grow!

Honeymoon Part II – Stowe, Vermont

For Part II of our honeymoon, we extended our trip and traveled to Stowe, Vermont to ski for the rest of our honeymoon.  It was almost a four hour drive up north.  It was great because we were in no rush at all, as long as you aren’t counting the speeding ticket my husband got on the way home from the airport after Honeymoon Part I.  Just time being together.  We stayed at the Stoweflake in one of the condos, and lived it up because it was our honeymoon.    It’s a great, quaint small place that was not crowded.  It was awesome and again, like St. Lucia, we will go back there one day!

We skied at Stowe Mountain Resort for two days.  As I mentioned in my last post, we went from one extreme to another.  Exchanging a ot tropical for a freezing cold one was quite the shock to the system! Our first night there we decided to splurge and go to a fine dining restaurant called Michael’s on the Hill .  It was like we were in a movie.  We found ourselves having a romantic candle-lit dinner with an amazing view and delicious food.  If you are in Stowe, VT don’t forget to make a reservation and have dinner there!

We ventured to the mountain the next morning.  I would be lying if I didn’t say to myself on the way there, “Whose crazy idea was this?????”.  Oh wait, mine!  I was freezing in the car, never mind being outside on the mountain, but we had a blast!  It was fun to ski a new mountain together, and get my form down.  If you’re into skiing make sure to contact me and will go ski together.  It’s such a fun activity to do and get a good burn going in your legs.  .  We enjoyed après ski together and just had fun!  Mr. Pidg tagged along too as you can see in the pictures below.

It didn’t matter if we were freezing our butts off or lounging by the beach as long as we were together, that’s all that mattered to us, all that still matters to us today and I hope for many years to come!

Follow along to all of our future travels with the haghtag #jenarayaadventures and #mrpidg.  Send a request and I will follow back.  Love looking at everyone’s adventures.

Spending time with your new husband, and in a location where you both can connect and be away from all of reality, is so important.  My husband and I went on our honeymoon 2 years ago, and I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed!  We got married in August.  My husband did say he didn’t want to travel somewhere warm while it was summer, so we decided to wait until the following winter to take our honeymoon.  At first I was a little bummed about waiting, but in the end I couldn’t have imagined packing everything for the wedding and also packing for a honeymoon.  It would have not been pretty, and I was glad we ended up waiting.  It made the ‘honeymoon stage’ last that much longer!
For our honeymoon, we decided to do something a little bit different: make it a two part trip!  I woke up one morning with an idea.  I love the beach and my husband loves to ski, so I suggested let’s go to the beach and ski afterwards.  We decided to travel to St. Lucia for a week and then to Stowe, Vermont for 4 days to ski.  One extreme to another!  To those couple who are adventurous, I highly suggest doing this.  It was a compromise and we both enjoyed what we love to do!
In St. Lucia, we stayed at the Windjammer Landing resort on the northwest side of the island.  We booked through a travel agent and had an idea of what the rooms looked like, but had NO IDEA what was waiting for us once we arrived.  The resort itself is on the side of a hill (practically a cliff!), and you are taken to your room in a shuttle.  The shuttles take very small, narrow roads up and down and only one car can get by as they drop you off at your room.  We believed we had been booked for a room with a view of the ocean, and oh my were we mistaken…..our travel agent had pulled through and we were staying in an ocean view villa!  A kitchen, living room and plunge pool with our own deck were the first things we saw as we opened the front door.  We went upstairs and found the bedroom with a huge bathroom, closet and another deck.  Yes you read that correctly: another deck which actually leads you to a roof deck with beach chairs.  It was awesome!  We cannot recommend a better place to visit and we will return there one day in the future!
Over the next seven days we lounged at the beach, ordered yummy drinks, and relaxed.  We went out on a few excursions, but not every day was planned which is how we wanted to spend our honeymoon.  A sunset cruise along the coast was exactly what we wanted for one of our first nights there.  We also did a land and sea excursion which was an incredible way to see more of the country.  We rode in the back of a jeep and stopped at a waterfall, volcano, had lunch in the rainforest.  During our jeep ride we passed through a few short rain showers which added to the adventure.  We finished up the afternoon sailing on a catamaran along the whole western coast, stopping in a cove to go snorkeling.  Cheers to St. Lucia rum as well, and I of course danced on the front of the boat on the way back to the marina!  Let’s be honest, you wouldn’t expect anything else; I love to dance and let loose.  My husband Sean also had his first zip lining experience, and if you haven’t done this it’s always a blast to do.
We have so many great memories of us there.  We even dressed up in our wedding attire to get pictures together on the beach.  Why not, you only live once!
Follow along to all of our future travels with the haghtag #jenarayaadventures.  Definitely send a request and I will follow back.  I love looking at everyone’s adventures as well.  Stay tuned to Part II of our honeymoon, SKIING!
